Our Commission Clubs were well represented at the 3rd Annual Equity in Politics Conference that took place Laurier Brantford on May 24th. The all-day conference was organized by a Committee of students and teachers at Brantford College Institute (BCI). Inspiring talks were given to local students by leaders such as Six Nations Chief Ava Hill and Cambridge MPP and Minister of Natural Resources Kathryn McGarry. It was great to have the speakers also interact with the students in attendance and those at the booth.
Our Commission Clubs were very pleased to have presence at the May 22nd 2017 Six Nations Bread and Cheese Festival. We had very engaging conversations and are grateful to our Commission Club volunteers and everyone who stopped by our booth. Thank you to all involved!
Another fantastic turnout for great conversation at our latest monthly breakfast social on May 6th. Thank you to all who came out and a very special thank you to our special guest speaker, Charlie Kopczyk, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Why Not City Missions and Why Not City Youth Centres. Everyone greatly valued hearing about the life-changing work that Charlie, his wife (and co-founder) Sue and many volunteers do with these organizations to help at-risk youth and the homeless in Brantford-Brant.
With the help of Club members and supporters as well as those in our community, we donated 37 homemade and store bought blankets on behalf of the Brantford-Brant Women's Liberal Club to Nova Vita, a local women's shelter. We even had a blanket come all the way from the west coast! Thank you to all who donated and thank you to our Executive Vice-President Heather MacDonald-Moore who led the drive!
Thank you to the many volunteers who came out for the Day of Action yesterday organized by our local Liberal Commission Clubs! It was a huge success thanks to you! We had a large number of door to door canvassers and callers of all ages. We were pleased to see several volunteers who came out for the first time since the 2015 campaign and others who were coming out for their first time to volunteer with the Liberal Party! Together they reached many hundreds at the doorstep and hundreds more over the phone over the course of the full day! We found new Liberal supporters, several new Liberal volunteers and gained valuable feedback about the Trudeau government. A huge thanks to everyone involved!
A huge thank you to the panelists, organizers and over 75 attendees for making our discussion forum and social on Advancing Gender Equality a very positive memorable evening despite the heavy rain downpour that evening. The panelists (Ruby Sahota, Jennifer Canning, Karen George, Elizabeth Lorenzin, Danielle Takacs and Sandra Vos) shared informative, inspiring and moving stories based on their personal experiences. They offered advice and guidance to women and men to ensure advancement of gender equality. They answered a wide range of questions from the audience. Lin Fines did an amazing job as a moderator and sharing her own stories and knowledge about challenges women have faced, and continue to face, in politics and the workforce. More great discussions were had at the social that followed.
We were pleased to have another great turnout for our 5th community forum on making homes more senior friendly, hosted by the Brantford-Brant Senior Liberals Club (BBSLC). Our special guest this time was Asmah Khan, a registered nurse. Previous forums our that Seniors Club have organized have included special guest speakers from Brantford Social Services, the March of Dimes, Saint Vincent de Paul, Brantford Red Cross and the Brantford Seniors' Resource Centre.
Thank you to the over 50 attendees who attended our latest monthly breakfast social! A great time was had by all and we were especially pleased to hear from our special guest Azra Alagic, Daughter of the Vote for Brantford-Brant, who shared her stories from the Daughters of the Vote Experience as our riding's representative in Ottawa. A special thank you to Azra for the fantastic talk and taking questions from our attendees.
